Some Of The Things That Make Me Happy

It seems that many conversations I have been in directly or indirectly (because I’m nosy) always revolves around tragedy. There is rarely a time in a coffee shop, on an airplane or happy hour meeting that doesn’t, in some facet, involve someone dying or loss of an eye. Just the other day two ladies were talking about their friend’s mother who had a rash and two weeks later she died. With the same breath, they were talking about shoes. I can’t tell if other people’s tragedy brings comfort or misery really does love company. To me, I work hard at surrounding myself with positives because there seems to be a lot of wet blankets in the world. Here are some of the things that put a smile on my face.

Golden Retrievers are my favorite. I had one when I was a kid. His name was Guy which came from the Sesame Street character “Guy Smiley“, because as a puppy he was the one out of the litter that had a perma-grin. These dogs live a care free life of just being happy. Not really known for their intelligence they go through life rolling in stuff, shedding, napping, drinking from the water bowl then laying their wet mouths on your lap, and being goofy. Above all they just love people which makes them the easiest going animal on the planet. If there is truth to reincarnation, I wouldn’t mind being a retriever. Shit, I practically have the same traits now.

Stormy nights always scared the ba-Jesus out of me as a kid, no thanks to the movie Poltergeist. Today I find them very relaxing. It’s a good reason to unplug the TV and the computer, turn on a reading lamp and just listen to storm approach. At times I may open the garage and watch the show from the safety of my folding chair. Lucky for me, there hasn’t been any real dangerous storms here in a while. If there are, you know I’m going to be the asshole on the news that was found 200 miles away in someone’s tree. I never heed the warnings.

I’m an addicted runner but my addiction doesn’t make me a good one. I have been running most of my life but I just am not meant to be one. That’s why I turn to “Runner’s World” magazine for inspiration. The motivational stories keep me on track to get up, put my running shoes on and head out into the vast darkness every morning. Even though I still come lumbering in, snorting and huffing, side stitched and limping, I still did it. Plus the review of shoes is usually right on.

I know this sounds strange but I am a big fan of foreign vintage advertisements. I consider them more art than anything else and if I could find a print of this above, I would so hang that in the kitchen. Can you imagine a time when this would make you want to buy pork?

One of my new favorite pass times is cruising YouTube for old commercials of yester-year. I’m saving this for a full post later but it also is on the list that makes me happy. More over, I really dig McDonald commercials from ’86-’88. I believe I may have consumed more cheeseburgers during that time but I feel the real reason is that advertisements back then focused on stories rather than the product. Just take a look at this. Until the end, I didn’t know if this was for Trapper Keepers or hight-tops.

Tiki themed anything really floats my board, man. One day I am going to have a basement that will look just like this. I can picture drinking blue martinis and listening to Link Ray on the turntable while outside it’s a whopping 20 degrees. It’s a great reflection of my life; where ever you are, you can always be somewhere else.

Well, that was a pretty pointless post but I had to get some happy thoughts churning. Meetings and sad sacks get to me after a while and just writing about this stuff has already made the day a little better. You guys should try this. I swear it works.

  1. and my years of using the wrong “there” is now going to be doomed to years of over compensation by using their all the wrong times.

  2. Ohh, goldies!
You know, Pitties are a lot like goldies, though they don’t shed as much.
I too would also like a Tiki-Themed ANYTHING. My parents spent their first years as newlyweds living in Hawaii, so there’s always been this personal feeling of romance and perfect-ness and freedom associated with that style.

  3. Love that pig!! Hey bill, could you possibly direct me to the site you found it at? I’d like to print it off.

I have a golden lab, goofy as hell and insanely lovable..I wonder If he’s reading this… Jake, you’re a good boy.

  4. I’m pretty easily happified. Boxes of puppies, Fun Dip, and long drives on a sunny day with my favorite tunes in the background usually do it for me.

  5. I love the foreign vintage ads as well. though recently I have been trying to acquire original pieces, as opposed to Pottery barn repos. They aren’t as good, but having an ad that actually hung somewhere at one point is kinda cool.

  6. That ad was great. I love picking up oddball pieces of art and saving them up for when I get another place. I think my bathrooms and hallways will feature a lot of that stuff, especially old Hammer horror movie posters.

I totally remember that McDonald’s commercial. The main character in that is one of the dozens of character actors from back then that you saw in a gazillion things but usually didn’t know the name of.

Golden retrievers are great! I’ve never owned a dog, but if I were to get one that would be near the top my list of possibilites. I mean, look at that face! How can you not like that face?

  7. I know exactly what you mean about your exercise addiction…I like to ride my bike and swim, but I know I’m not fast. I get passed all the time at both.

Good handsoap from Bath and Body Works makes me happy. So does a new book and a fresh tube of lip balm.

  8. Hey small world, guess who originally ripped that First Day commercial and uploaded it to RetroJunk?

  9. I wanted a Golden Retriever when I was about 10. I know one afternoon I looked through the newpaper classified ads sitting by my Grandma and I bugged her everytime I saw an ad that said “Golden retriever, free to a good home” they had a dog at the time, a little poodle, but I wanted a big sloppy loyal friendly golden retriever. Why? Because it seemed like every little boy in an old movie had one. I thought it would fit my tomboy image. She said NO and stop bothering me for one you won’t get one!! I eventually got over it.

What makes me happy? Someday I should do a blog or a youtube video about that topic. I would think all my friends even online ones would know by now but that is probably just the benefit of the doubt. You should be subscribed to my youtube videos Will!!! I do them about once every two weeks it really depends on my mood. Sometimes I do 5 in one week, sometimes I do only one in a whole month. Sometimes I upload 6 in one day and then not post one for a week and a half.

Anyway lol, this is what makes me happy.

A really great independent movie. Most movies by the director Larry Clark. A movie that is real, raw, and it makes you think. The people in the movie looks like average people. I want to make an independent movie someday, I think I have what it takes. I have a script in my head. I bet you didn’t know that. I have only told two people the storyline and I am definitely not saying it here publicly.

Thrift stores/garage sales I LOVE a bargain. If you spend less you can get more, simple as that. I can spend 2 and a half hours in a thrift store easy. Just give me 10 dollars and I’ll come out with some great stuff. Some of it is wonderfully vintage and some of it is in “like new” condition. Most of my wardrobe is from goodwill and yard sales. You couldn’t tell if I didn’t tell you. It’s therapeutic in a way. To distract me from my life just for an hour or two.

Watching tv shows I have watched a million times before or rewatching movies I have watched that I have sentimental value towards or they just flat out hands down are a kick ass movie. I watched a lot of movies and shows growing up so that covers a lot of ground.

Cheesy made for tv based on a true story movie

I’m trying to think of things that make me happy that have nothing to do with tv!! It’s hard!!!

Looking up old music videos I remember watching when I was a kid or a teenager on youtube. Looking up various clips on youtube and actually finding entire holiday specials, old movies, tv shows, commercials I remember watching when I was a kid like PSAs on youtube. I am subscribed to 70 people on youtube so I spend a lot of time over there. The people that I watch daily put a big smile on my face. CutewithChris anyone?? 🙂

Making youtube videos. It’s a new artform. I feel very creative when I do a short homemade movie with either my webcam or my camcorder. I have an Aiptek a-hd 720p camcorder I got for Christmas. I hate flip cameras with a passion. You have to buy AA batteries for them for goodness sakes!!! And why spend the same amount of money for THAT one when you can get one that is hdtv quality w/ a lithion ion rechargeable battery for the SAME PRICE?!?! Augh that isn’t your beef sorry…

Everything that X-E consists of. There I said it.

ANT’s blog is a big part of my life too. He talks about empowering yourself and being able to do anything you set your mind to. He also talks about being kind to others.

Also food. I really appreciate a really nice slice of pie, a chocolate dipped ice cream cone, and other treats. It’s a bad thing to say but food makes me happy.

That’s it for now, Will. Take care dude.
